Kristen –
Hi, I reached your blog via that Discovery Influencer thing. I’ve been thinking about your perfectly well-reasoned and valid disinterest in watching that “surviving the cut” show (that really doesn’t belong on Discovery…), and how some random weirdo responded with a McCarthy-era indictment of your patriotism.
That sort of thing really bothers me, and I’d hate for you to somehow conflate the military and the veteran community as a whole with those kind of attitudes. The right wing tends to portray itself as owning the veteran community, and they pull it off pretty well. But there’s a huge portion of us that did indeed serve, but never drank the Conservative Anti-Environment Kool-aid.
You seem to be particularly motivated by your concern for the environment, so I thought you might be interested in taking a look at http://www.operationfree.net. It’s the website of a great veterans’ group, solely focused on pushing clean/renewable energy, based on our experiences with carbon dependency and how it affects our national security posture. We do a lot of lobbying in DC and around the country. Like you, we’re doing what we can for the planet.
So the next time you’re confronted with some (expletive deleted) shouting about “the boarders(sic)” and trying to take ownership of “the troops,” remember that they don’t speak vets like me, and there are a LOT of vets like me.
Best,
Dylan Knapp

oh, and feel free to delete these…I wasn’t sure where they’d actually post, so if you think it’s detrimental to the readability of your site, go ahead and take them down…sorry!

Hey Dylan, it’s no problem! I really appreciate you getting in touch, it’s wonderful to get the perspective of a veteran and that you put so much thought into these things. I’ll check out the site you linked me, thank you very much for your support and for visiting my site!
